One of my favorite parts of being a Practitioner of The Bowen Technique is supporting Mums-to-be through their pregnancy journey.
Pregnancy is very demanding on the body, right from conception through to birth and beyond.
The Bowen Technique is an holistic, gentle, soft tissue treatment that can support the body through all stages of pregnancy. It's applied to the body using unique gentle rolling type moves over soft tissue, on specific points on the body, to stimulate the body's own healing mechanisms to bring the body and its functional systems back into balance. The moves are interspersed with intentional breaks which allow the body to process the treatment and respond and also to encourage the body to enter a state of deep relaxation.
The Bowen Technique can be useful in supporting the body during pregnancy to adjust to the many rapid changes taking place, from changing hormone levels, a shift in the centre of gravity, changes in the pelvis, extra stress loading on the lower back and also the many internal changes that take place to make room for a rapidly growing baby.
Whilst the mum-to-be's body is uniquely amazing at adapting during the various stages of the pregnancy journey sometimes the demands placed upon it are to much and unwanted problems are created. Pregnancy can often bring about lower back pain, sciatica, pelvic pain, sacrum pain, carpel tunnel syndrome, swollen ankles, heartburn, symphysis pubic dysfunction, and coccydynia in addition to tiredness and morning sickness.
The good news is that The Bowen Tecnique is a versatile therapy that can be applied lying, or as the pregnancy progresses sitting or standing and administered through light clothing so no undressing involved, maintaining optimum comfort for mum-to-be at all times. It has no contraindications and can be used at any time throughout pregnancy journey to help with those unwanted symptoms and additional problems pregnancy can bring. Mums-to-be also often find The Bowen Technique helps to relieve their pre-birth anxiety to, allowing them to feel more relaxed and in control of their birthing experience.
I've had the pleasure of treating mums-to-be and helping them with pregnancy sciatica, coccydynia and pregnancy carpal tunnel syndrome, lower back and pelvic pain all of them found The Bowen Technique relieved their symptoms during pregnancy and found that their bodies adapted well post-birth too.
Here's what some of the mums-to-be have said about their experience of using The Bowen Technique to support them through their pregnancy journey and associated problems;
Symphysis pubic dysfunction -
This lady used Bowen to support her body throughout all the trimesters and explains how Bowen helped to get her through the pain associated with Symphsis Pubic dysfunction.
"During my pregnancy I suffered with pubic symphysis dysfunction PSD! A condition which affects 1 in 5 women during pregnancy. It caused me a lot of pelvic, lower back and thigh pain. I have suffered lots of falls from horses over the years and thankfully always walked away unscathed, however the unseen damage came back to bite me during pregnancy. I used Bowen regularly throughout my pregnancy to manage the pain, as I was adamant I didn't want girdles, or crutches, or medication! And I didn't and up until my contractions started I was still active, walking the dog, driving, housework etc! There are no contra indications with Bowen and pregnancy so I would suggest any pregnant or post pregnant women who are suffering give Bowen a try!"
This lady contacted me during her second trimester when the pain in her lower back and bottom became so unbareable she was finding it difficult to sit down. Treatment was continued right up to just before the birth.
"After my first baby I developed coccydynia, which made life quite uncomfortable. I've been through other treatments ie physio, acupuncture etc and nothing really seemed to help, I was then referred to the pain clinic at my local hospital. This was fine until I found out I was expecting again, treatment had to be postponed. Thankfully jackie has been able to treat throughout my pregnancy and I am going to continue afterwards to see if I can really get to the 'bottom' of the issue."
This lady has found that since giving birth that the coccydynia is no longer an issue for her and has had no further pain.
Carpal tunnel syndrome-
"Entering the second trimester I began to experience pregnancy induced carpel tunnel syndrome, which left me with numbness in my hands and fingers causing me difficulty to grip things. After having Bowen treatment I had 10 days free from symptoms and again after further treatments the symptoms have been relieved. I am continuing to have Bowen treatments for the remainder of my pregnancy to manage the symptoms and to support my body through the demanding changes it faces and in preparation to allow my body to be the best it can be for the forthcoming birth."
In summary The Bowen Technique can be a valuable option to support your body through the many rapid changes it faces throughout the pregnancy journey. Whether or not you are challenged by some of the unwanted problems that have been mentioned, Bowen can be great for just keeping the body balanced and maintaining optimum wellbeing through a exciting but demanding time. If your looking to support your body through this demanding process give The Bowen Technique a try!
